Project 4: Autoring
On the surface, this project originally seemed quite unexciting - the brief was to design a casing for a camera that would sit on the dashboard and activate if the car was stolen. The client originally asked for a nondescript ‘black box’ but as we worked through the project, it became clear that they wanted something a bit more interesting. One of the biggest challenges I faced on this project was working with the restraints of the electronics; the outer dimensions were limited to ensure the device met cellular regulations but the dimensions of the internal electronics required an area that would just fit into this. This didn’t leave much room to create an interesting black box but I was pleased with the final result and it won an award at the XXXXX car show.
FUNCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
After the initial round of concept generation and prototyping, it was clear that the solution was not really working - the designs seemed boring and too boxy. There was also updates to the electronics made after the initial concepts which required some changes to the geometry. At this point, I went back to the drawing board and looked at other consumer products for inspiration.
DESIGN REFINEMENT
Talk about adding details like the lines and having to refine it for moulding - very thin wall thicknesses becasue of constraints
A selection of the renders produced of the moon collection are shown above. Each different item is slightly different but has an element of a crescent moon within it to ensure that the collection was consistent.
